A few weeks ago, I had the immense privilege of sitting in on a deeply enriching session with Adenike Ogunlesi, the powerhouse behind the beloved Nigerian children’s clothing brand, Ruff ‘n’ Tumble . Nike looking resplendent in classic blue adire shared her beautiful story with a gathering of women from the @womeninipNigeria community, and what began as a fireside chat quickly turned into a masterclass on purpose, leadership, authenticity, and the beauty of owning your story.

Nike’s story is as compelling as her presence. Born to parents who envisioned a legal career for her, she was expected to follow the path of law and live up to the family legacy. Her father, especially, was keen on her becoming a lawyer. But Nike had different dreams. She told her mother, with quiet confidence, that she had no inkling to practice law — she was creative, and creativity was where her heart lay.

Her mother, a disciplined woman of substance, didn’t resist but insisted on structure. Nike was trained from a young age to wake up early, go to the markets, interact with traders, and understand people. These lessons, planted in youth, blossomed into a strong work ethic and a grounded approach to business that defines her today.

From these roots, Ruff ‘n’ Tumble was born — a proudly Nigerian brand that is now a household name. But beyond the brand is a woman who is deeply committed to giving back, preserving heritage, and passing on wealth and values to the next generation. Nike reminded us that being unapologetic about our ambition — including the desire for wealth — is not arrogance but purpose-driven clarity.

One of the stories that stood out for me was about her mother’s 50-year-old Adire cloth collection, which inspired Nike to create a cultural event in partnership with Ecobank. This birthed the Adire Festival, celebrating traditional textiles and highlighting the intersection of heritage, business, and creativity — a trifecta that defines Nike’s ethos. She is a woman that understands the importance of partnerships in building new ecosystems.

Walking in Purpose: Lessons from Mrs. Adenike Ogunlesi, Founder of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble

More than a businesswoman, Nike Ogunlesi is a teacher of life lessons. She spoke from a place of raw authenticity and deep wisdom. Here are 10 of my favourite nuggets from that session:

1. “What is your gift to yourself?”

Your sense of worth is directly tied to the gifts you allow yourself to receive — emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

2. “The day you stop expecting external validation is the day you know why you were born.”

Purpose is internal. It cannot be outsourced to applause or approval.

3. “It’s difficult to inspire people if you don’t lead by example.”

Leadership is not in titles; it’s in the life you live.

4. “Self-regulation is key. Without it, you cannot lead.”

Emotional control, discipline, and clarity are the bedrock of influence.

5. “Learn to communicate effectively. Leadership is not barking orders.”

True leaders listen, empathise, and build consensus.

6. “You are your brand in the beginning.”

Before your logo, website, or storefront — your values are what people experience.

7. “Protect your brand — it’s alive and it reflects your value system.”

A brand is more than aesthetics. It is a living extension of your character.

8. “Your values determine your business culture.”

Culture isn’t written on walls. It’s lived in everyday decisions.

9. “Legal protection is non-negotiable.”

Intellectual property and legal structure are essential tools for longevity.

10. “Be aware that you will change — and that’s okay.”

Self-awareness means embracing your evolution and responding with grace and adaptability.

Being in Nike’s presence was an awakening. Her story is proof that clarity of purpose, rooted in values and a desire to serve, leads to prosperity — not just in money but in impact. She is living proof that when you lead with heart, vision, and discipline, the world takes note.

Men and women alike can learn from her journey — not only about building a brand or running a business but about building a life worth living. One that honours culture, prioritises authenticity, and dares to dream in full colour.

To all who want to develop their A-game, take a page from Nike Ogunlesi’s playbook: Own your story. Protect your dream. Lead with purpose. And never apologise for being who you are.
